Dr. Aisling Kelliher: In this talk I will discuss the work of the Interactive Neurorehabilitation Lab at Virginia Tech, where together with our research partners at Carnegie Mellon University, Emory Rehabilitation Hospital and Arizona State University, we are tackling these three issues through developing smart home based rehabilitation systems for stroke and and knee replacement patients.

Abstract: With the aging of the US population, there is an increasing need for effective and accessible rehabilitation services for debilitating illnesses and injury such as stroke. Effective rehabilitation requires intense training and the ability to adapt the training program based on the progress of the patient and the judgment of the therapist. Adaptive home based rehabilitation is emerging as a key avenue for improving health and wellness outcomes with the potential for reducing costs. This form of Smart Rehab can provide evidence-based customization of therapy in the home, together with the increased intensity necessary for better functional outcomes over a shorter duration. While there are a number of challenges to scaling adaptive rehabilitation in the home, the three primary issues are i) replicating the functions of the therapist in the home; ii) motivating the patient to increase adherence and iii) implementing adaptive rehabilitation through low costs systems. The Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) SIG fosters collaboration, education and thought-leadership among its members and external groups relating to RPM, and considers issues relating to RPM hardware and software as well as other topics including artificial intelligence as our primary target areas to address. The GM Care Record allows workers in health or social care, easy access to patient information that is critical to support decision-making about patient care and treatment. It is being used to access over 140k patient records by over 13.5k frontline users each month (Dec. 2021) and connects over 500 organisations including primary and secondary care, mental health and community trusts, out of hours services, specialist trusts, social care and the region’s ambulance service.

It’s an extension of integrated care records already live in each locality of Greater Manchester. An Innovative In-Home Rehabilitation Intervention for Persons with Chronic TBI and Their Families: A presentation and discussion with Dr. Helene Moriarty and Dr. Laraine Winter

Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) often experience ongoing symptoms and limitations for years after their injuries. The investigators have designed and tested a model of TBI rehabilitation that is delivered in the home and includes family members. They will describe their ongoing NIH-funded research testing these approaches for veterans and civilians with TBI and their families.
