U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Medical Imaging

Medical imaging is the use of various techniques to create visual representations of the interior of a body for clinical analysis and medical intervention. These techniques include X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. Each technique has its own unique capabilities and limitations, and different techniques are used depending on the specific clinical question being asked.

X-rays, for example, are primarily used to examine the bones of the skeleton and can be used to detect fractures, osteoporosis, and other conditions. CT scans use X-rays to create detailed, 3-dimensional images of the body and are often used to evaluate injuries or illnesses that affect the internal organs. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues, such as the brain and muscles, and is often used to diagnose conditions such as multiple sclerosis and brain tumors. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of internal organs and is often used to visualize a developing fetus during pregnancy. Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive material to create images of internal organs and is used to detect conditions such as thyroid cancer and heart disease.

Medical imaging plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of many medical conditions. It enables doctors to see inside the body without the need for invasive procedures and can be used to detect problems at an early stage, when they are more treatable. It also plays a key role in guiding medical procedures, such as surgery and biopsy. However, it also involve radiation that carries risk such as cancer. Therefore, it is important that imaging tests are only performed when they are medically necessary and that the lowest possible dose of radiation is used.
