How Medical Technology Is Transforming Support for Psychedelic Drug Recovery

The use of psychedelic drugs was once a niche phenomenon and was used under the radar. Well, it’s not exactly like that anymore. LSD, psilocybin, DMT, and ketamine are increasingly being encountered, either in clinical or non-clinical environments.

Health providers are getting up to speed. Now, they have to consider the hazards as well as how the process of recovery would actually work for individuals who use these drugs.

When Psychedelic Drug Use Becomes a Health Concern

The vast majority of people who experiment with psychedelics do not come into any serious difficulties, but some do. With time, anxiety or moodiness may creep in or simply the inability to cope with the daily grind can take its toll.

In many cases the early warning signs are not apparent.. Bad sleep. Avoiding work/family duties. Backing away from close friends.

Many people find themselves looking for hallucinogenic rehab programs when things get tough. These programs combine medical and therapeutic services, and they typically consider all mental health concerns that may be entangled in the drug use as well.

Things aren’t falling apart anymore, doctors aren’t waiting. They’re looking for patterns in the early stages and that’s good for their future.

The Role of Medical Technology in Recovery

Recovery programs are not as they should be. That all changed with telehealth. There is now the option for someone to be able to speak with a therapist from their couch instead of driving across town.

This is important to rural people. It is also suitable for those that simply feel uncomfortable going to a clinic for the first time.

Wearing devices has also left an impact. If you wear an activity tracker or fitness band that tracks sleep or heart rate, this could help you know if your stress is building up and be able to take steps before it becomes more serious.

Then there’s the paperwork side. EHRs eliminate the scenario where a therapist, doctor, and case manager are working on different information.

Digital Tools for Monitoring Mental Health and Preventing Relapse

Now people are able to document what he or she feels or wants for the day through an app. It’s not much but if you do something day after day over a longer period of time, patterns begin to emerge rapidly.

Some of these apps gather data and more. Having someone report they’re feeling unstable, a support team can be notified immediately.

Online support groups have picked up steam as well. People meet those who truly understand what they are going through – no commuting required.

That sort of a community makes a difference. Provides people with a safe space to land on the days it is harder.

AI is also beginning to make its way into this arena, albeit in a more subtle manner. Other tools are looking for early indications that someone might be slipping through with your journal entries, or with the check-in responses.

Building a Personalised, Long-Term Recovery Journey

Most people do not recover in a linear fashion. It’s never been this way. Technological advancements at least contribute to creating a plan around the person rather than a one-size-fits-all.

One aspect of that is genetic testing. It can guide the doctors to the drugs that are more likely to help, particularly when other diseases are involved.

Wearable and app data also offer support. The care team doesn’t need to wait for the next appointment if someone is having difficulties.

Support doesn’t end upon the end of the day and in a world awash with digital solutions, it rarely does.

Digital check-ins have been extended for months, and sometimes years, and help people stay connected.

All of this isn’t making recovery easy. Medical technology, however, is providing more tools, more flexibility, more hope than ever before for the people and their families.
