Medigy: Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy (also known as root-end resection) is a surgical procedure that is used to treat an infected or inflamed tooth root. The procedure is typically performed by an endodontist, which is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) and surrounding tissues.

During an apicoectomy, the endodontist makes a small incision in the gums to expose the affected tooth root. They then remove the tip of the root, which is called the apex, and any infected or inflamed tissue. A small filling is then placed in the root canal to seal it and prevent further infection.

The main goal of an apicoectomy is to save the tooth and prevent the need for extraction. It’s a common procedure for saving teeth that have failed to heal after a root canal treatment. It’s also a treatment option when the tooth has a persistent infection or inflammation that cannot be treated with non-surgical endodontic treatment.

It’s an important aspect of healthcare as it helps to preserve the natural teeth and avoid the need for replacement options like dental implant or bridge which can be more invasive and expensive.
