Alveolar ridge augmentation is a surgical procedure that is used to restore the natural contour of the jawbone in the area of missing teeth, to prepare for the placement of dental implants. The procedure aims to add or restore the height and width of the alveolar ridge, which is the portion of the jawbone that supports the roots of the teeth.
The alveolar ridge may be lost or resorbed due to various reasons such as periodontal disease, tooth extraction, injury, or congenital defects. Without enough bone support, dental implants cannot be placed, and traditional dentures or bridges are not a viable option.
The procedure can be done by using different techniques, such as:
Bone grafting, which involves the placement of bone material into the area of the jawbone that needs to be augmented. The bone can be harvested from the patient’s own body (autograft), from a cadaver (allograft), or from a synthetic source.
Sinus lift, which is a specific type of bone grafting procedure used to augment the upper jaw, particularly in the area of the molars and premolars. Guided tissue regeneration, which uses a membrane to guide the growth of new bone in the area of the alveolar ridge.
The duration of the healing process can vary, depending on the type of augmentation procedure, the size of the area being treated, and the individual’s healing rate. After the healing process is completed, the implant can be placed and the patient can have a permanent dental prosthesis.
