Medical Subject Headings (MeSH): Intubation

Intubation in healthcare is the process of inserting a flexible plastic tube, called an endotracheal tube, through the patient’s nose or mouth and into the trachea (windpipe) in order to maintain an open airway and assist with breathing. Intubation is typically performed by healthcare providers such as anesthesiologists, paramedics or critical care physicians, who are specially trained in the procedure.

Intubation is usually performed when a patient is unable to maintain their own airway, or when it is necessary to assist with breathing during surgery or other medical procedures. The tube is secured in place and is connected to a mechanical ventilator to provide the patient with oxygen. The tube also provides a way to suction the patient’s airway if needed.

There are different types of intubation such as oral and nasal intubation, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages depending on the patient’s condition. The procedure is usually performed under sedation or general anesthesia to minimize discomfort and anxiety.

Intubation is an important aspect of healthcare because it can help to ensure that a patient’s airway is maintained and that they receive the oxygen they need to support their vital functions. It can also be used as a life-saving measure in emergency situations when a patient is not able to breathe on their own.

After the procedure, patients will be monitored for any complications such as infection, bleeding or damage to the trachea. They will also be extubated, or have the tube removed, once they are able to maintain their own airway.
