What Exactly Are Active Proteins?

Think of active proteins as enzymes. In fact, these are called enzymes.

These enzymes act as catalysts that help speed up the reactions without being used up themselves.

Additionally, these enzymes can perform their jobs repeatedly, helping essential processes like digestion, energy production, and DNA repair.

How Do Active Proteins Work

Step 1: Binding to Substrates

The process begins when the enzyme binds to the right substrate.

Every enzyme has a specific shape with an area called the “active site.”

The active site fits perfectly with particular molecules known as substrates.

This specificity ensures that enzymes only speed up the correct reactions.

Step 2: Forming the Enzyme-Substrate Complex

Next, when the enzyme and substrate join, they form what’s known as an enzyme-substrate complex.

During this brief moment, the enzyme slightly adjusts (this occurs numerous times) its shape to tightly grip the substrate, a process called “induced fit.”

This makes the reaction efficient.

Step 3: Catalysis of Reaction

Once the fit is achieved, the enzyme-substrate complex begins speeding up the reaction.

It achieves this by lowering the “activation energy,” which is the energy required to start a chemical reaction.

Step 4: Releasing Products

Finally, during the reaction, the substrate transforms into new molecules called products.

Afterward, these products no longer fit perfectly into the active site, causing the enzyme to release them.

The enzyme is then free to bind to new substrates and repeat the process.

Factors Influencing Enzyme Activity

There are multiple factors that determine the efficiency of enzymes

Temperature: Enzymes typically work best at a temperature of 37°C to 98.6°F. Too hot or too cold temperatures can reduce their activity or even damage them.

pH Levels: Similar to temperature, enzymes also have ideal pH ranges. A pH that’s too acidic or basic can alter enzyme shape, making it harder for substrates to bind.
Concentration: Concentration is a little complicated. This is because high concentrations of enzymes and substrates generally speed up reactions, but only up to a certain point. After that, adding more substrates, there’s no change in the reaction speed.

Importance of Enzymes in the Body

Enzymes are crucial because they help with essential survival tasks like:

  • Digestion: Active proteins break down food into smaller, easy to absorb nutrients. For instance, amylase in saliva is breaks down starches into sugars.
  • Energy Production: Similar to digestion, enzymes help with energy production, as they convert glucose into energy during cellular respiration.
  • DNA Replication and Repair: Special enzymes ensure DNA accurately copies itself during cell division and fix damaged DNA strands.

Enzyme Inhibition: Controlling Activity

Yes, enzymes are crucial for life; however, there are certain times when it becomes equally important to control enzyme activity, such as during the  HIV/AIDS treatment. This control is known as enzyme inhibition, and it can be:

  • Competitive Inhibition: An inhibitor molecule competes with the substrate for the active site. This prevents the substrate from binding.
  • Non-competitive Inhibition: Inhibitor molecules bind elsewhere on the enzyme, changing its shape and affecting the active site indirectly.
