It’s the 50th anniversary of medicare in 2022 and a good time to look back and plan for the future. Looking back is imperative, as we remind ourselves about the roots of medicare, the values and design principles that underpinned the establishment of medicare, and the heroic people who really made a difference in getting those foundations in place. It is equally in fact more important to plan for the future, as we recognize the challenges that existed prior to the pandemic, and the new ones that have emerged since. We need to confirm the values and objectives that guide us. Aligning with those, we need to determine what should stay the same and what we need to do differently over the next 50 years.

CHSPR’s long-standing conference promotes discussion between policy-makers, academics, providers, patients and national organizations on timely issues shaping health systems in Canada. The 2022 conference will bring together research and policy experts, students, patients, and care practitioners from across the health care system. All or almost all speakers will appear virtually, but the conference will support both in-person and virtual attendance for participants, subject to public health restrictions.

In value-based models of health care delivery, providers are financially rewarded or penalized based on the quality of care they provide to patients, typically measured by patient outcomes. The specifics of value-based care models can take several forms, but in many cases such as accountable care organizations (ACOs) they involve risk-sharing or shared savings arrangements between multiple payer and provider organizations. To achieve the goals of value-based care, all involved organizations must be able to effectively share and integrate data from multiple sources.

Join the HIMSS Interoperability & HIE Community as experts in this area discuss a recent study that aims to inform efforts to support and improve data integration to support value-based care.  The findings are based on qualitative case study interviews with individuals across 21 organizations selected based on evidence of advanced data integration or value-based care. These stakeholder interviews focus on the current state of data integration, the uses of data integration in value-based care, and the barriers and facilitators for data integration.
