Electronic Health Record (HER) alerts may help bridge the 17-year gap between publication of evidence-based guidelines and consistent implementation in practice by healthcare providers. The Pragmatic Trials of Messaging to Providers about Treatment (PROMPT) studies are investigating the use of informational alerts within the (EHR) to providers that inform them of FDA approved, evidence-based therapies for patients who meet certain inclusion criteria. Dr. Riello will highlight key takeaways from the PROMPT-HF trial and present the results of PROMPT-LIPID trial, recently shared for the first time as a late-breaking clinical trial at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions on November 6. The PROMPT-HF trial results show that prescribers who viewed the Best Practice Advisory (BPA) were 41% more likely to consider prescribing an additional guideline-directed medical therapy class and 79% of alerted providers in the PROMPT-HF trial agreed that the alert was effective. Was the PROMPT-LIPID alert effective at improving adherence to AHA/ACC guidelines for lipid-lowering therapies?

Key Takeaways:

  • Adherence to clinical guidelines is difficult to establish, taking roughly 17 years from publication to implementation
  • EHR alerts may help bridge the gap between evidence-based guidelines and real-world practice
  • Seventy-nine percent of alerted providers in the PROMPT-HF trial agreed that the alert was effective at enabling improved prescription of guideline-directed medical therapies for heart failure
  • EHR alerts may improve awareness and adherence to AHA/ACC guidelines for lipid-lowering therapies
