Ambient scribes were pitched as a way to ease the burden on stressed-out doctors by automatically documenting patient visits. But a new study suggests clinicians may need guidance to get the most out of these artificial intelligence tools. The large new study of AI scribe use by 1,800 clinicians across five academic medical centers from 2023 to 2025 found those using the technology saved 16 minutes of documentation time and spent 13 fewer minutes in the medical record for every eight hours of patient care.
A large real-world study of AI scribes across 1,800 clinicians found they saved only about 16 minutes per 8-hour shift and did not significantly reduce after-hours EHR work, yet they still improved clinician well-being, suggesting the value may be psychological rather than purely time-based. The modest time savings and inconsistent use patterns indicate that simply deploying the technology isn't enough—health systems need to provide guidance and optimize workflows to help clinicians actually maximize the benefits of ambient scribes.
