Large language models (LLMs) are poised to transform physician interactions with electronic health records (EHRs) by assisting clinical documentation, drafting preliminary diagnostic reports, and supporting patient communication. While LLMs reduce administrative burden, their integration in clinical workflows introduces the risk of blending AI- and human-generated content within EHRs.
Generative AI integration within electronic health records can reduce physician burnout and administrative workload, but clear transparency and traceability standards are essential to maintain patient safety and clinical accountability. Strong AI governance in healthcare systems will become increasingly important as U.S. hospitals expand the use of AI-assisted clinical documentation and communication tools.
