Healthcare CIO Must Accelerate the EMR To the Public Cloud
Healthcare providers are increasingly embracing the public cloud, with 56% of surveyed organizations boosting their cloud spending in the past year, even amid economic uncertainty. While the potential benefits of public cloud adoption are clear, the historical challenge has been integrating Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, as they couldn't be installed in public cloud environments. Initially, healthcare entities mainly used public cloud for disaster recovery and EMR backups, but this is evolving. More healthcare providers are now transitioning their production EMR systems to the cloud. For instance, Mount Sinai Health System utilizes Microsoft Azure Large Instances, tailored to support EMR systems with the capacity for 50 million database accesses per second. Microsoft is not alone; other public cloud providers also facilitate healthcare EMR system migration. Given that EMR represents a substantial investment, healthcare organizations are increasingly considering public cloud adoption as their primary choice.
