Advances in machine learning and contactless sensors have given rise to ambient intelligence—physical spaces that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of humans. Here we review how this technology could improve our understanding of the metaphorically dark, unobserved spaces of healthcare.
Ambient intelligence — using AI with contactless sensors to understand patient behavior and clinical environments — can improve hospital safety, workflow efficiency, and early risk detection without adding workload to clinicians. For U.S. healthcare systems, these “smart environments” could help reduce medical errors, support aging-at-home care, and shift healthcare toward more continuous, preventive monitoring.
