Management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is an increasing challenge for health care systems. Although remote patient monitoring presents a promising solution by utilizing technology to monitor patients outside clinical settings, there is a lack of knowledge about the effect on resource utilization.
Remote patient monitoring for chronic diseases can slightly reduce hospitalizations and shorten hospital stays by allowing earlier intervention through continuous at-home health tracking. For U.S. healthcare systems facing high chronic-care costs, scalable telemonitoring programs could improve care efficiency while shifting more management from hospitals to outpatient and home-based care.
