Chronic breathlessness is a highly prevalent, distressing symptom among people with chronic respiratory disease (CRD), often persisting despite optimal treatment. Primary care clinicians are well-positioned to offer early access to self-management support, however, many report limited knowledge, resources and confidence in managing breathlessness.
Primary care–based self-management programs for chronic respiratory disease can improve symptom control, patient confidence, and long-term quality of life while reducing hospital dependence. Expanding accessible respiratory care support in community healthcare settings may help address the growing burden of chronic lung disease in the U.S.
