An Equity Analysis Of Remote Patient Monitoring Programs Unveils Assumptions On Digital Health Equity

To assess if remote patient monitoring (RPM) programs for chronic conditions are positioned to advance equity through inclusive practices, 119 papers were evaluated against 11 multi-level equity parameters. Equity parameters were inconsistent and incompletely reported suggesting assumptions are being made about the inherent equitability of RPM solutions. Reporting guidelines should include how RPM programs address inclusive strategies.

As remote patient monitoring expands across the U.S., health systems should not assume these programs are inherently equitable. Designing RPM with digital access, language support, accessibility, and socioeconomic barriers in mind will be essential to ensure underserved communities benefit equally from virtual care innovations.
