Chronic diseases, including cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory illnesses, account for 75% of global deaths, with disproportionate impact in low- and middle-income countries. These conditions often coexist with psychological distress, making resilience a dynamic ability to adapt and recover—crucial for enhancing coping, quality of life, and treatment adherence.
This review shows that building psychological resilience — via interventions like mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy, social support and telehealth — can significantly improve treatment adherence, mental well-being and quality of life for people with chronic diseases.
