The healthcare burnout crisis isn’t new, but it’s getting a lot worse. In 2024, more than 60% of U.S. doctors reported symptoms of burnout, according to joint research from the American Medical Association and Stanford Medicine. The top reasons were no surprise — too much paperwork and too many administrative responsibilities. The World Health Organization first classified burnout as an “occupational phenomenon” in 2019. Since then, it’s become a structural fault line running through modern medicine.Now, a new wave of tech companies is betting that artificial intelligence, used carefully, could help close that gap. AI-powered assistants are being built to help doctors get back time, eliminate friction and focus more on patient care.
Dr. Ruben Amarasingham, CEO of Pieces and a former hospitalist himself, says the new tool is designed to “operate like a clinical colleague in your pocket.” The assistant speaks with you and modifies the medical notes it is already writing in real time based on that conversation. It can also integrate directly with electronic health records (EHR) and adapt its interface to the clinician’s style.But Pieces isn’t the only company in the market with offerings that listen to clinician-patient conversations, transcribe notes and integrate with electronic health records. Microsoft’s DAX Copilot, for example, is perhaps one of the most established players, used by thousands of healthcare providers today.
