The nursing crisis plaguing the medical field isn’t a new challenge, but it’s reaching a breaking point. Increasing demand, an aging workforce and educational bottlenecks have created a perfect storm of high stress and low morale among nurses. As a result, nursing positions across the country remain unfilled, forcing medical institutions to operate at diminished capacity.Artificial intelligence (AI) is stepping up to alleviate some of the burden on healthcare systems. My journey in healthcare technology spans over two decades, during which I've collaborated with leading institutions like Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland Health System. Through these partnerships, I've gained insights into the diverse needs of healthcare institutions, from IT to marketing. But before we get into how healthcare leaders can and are utilizing AI in this field, let’s start by exploring how we got where we are today.
According to the Chamber of Commerce, the number of registered nurses dropped by over 100,000 from 2020 to 2021. Furthermore, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an alarming "193,100 openings for RNs each year through 2032 when nurse retirements and workforce exits are factored into the number of nurses needed in the U.S."An aging workforce is approaching retirement, while educational bottlenecks limit the number of new nurses entering the field. Nursing programs are struggling to keep up with demand due to faculty shortages, limited clinical placement sites, and funding constraints. Plus, long hours, high patient loads, and the emotional and physical demands of the job are pushing many nurses to their breaking point.
