Standard Occupational Classification (SOC): Social Workers

Social workers play a crucial role in the healthcare industry, providing support and assistance to individuals, families, and communities. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and mental health facilities, among others. Social workers in the healthcare field help patients and families navigate the healthcare system, connect them with resources and services, and provide emotional support and counseling. They also help patients and families understand and cope with health-related issues and develop treatment plans. To be successful as a social worker in healthcare, individuals must have strong communication skills, be empathetic and compassionate, and have a good understanding of healthcare policies and programs. They must also have a master’s degree in social work (MSW) and be licensed by the state in which they practice.
