Standard Occupational Classification (SOC): Paralegals and Legal Assistants

Paralegals and Legal Assistants in Healthcare are responsible for providing support to lawyers within a healthcare setting by researching and analyzing legal issues, preparing legal documents, and assisting with trial preparation. They may also be responsible for maintaining and organizing case files, communicating with clients and other legal professionals, and conducting investigations. They may also assist healthcare providers and facilities with compliance with federal and state laws, regulations and administrative rules.

In healthcare, paralegals and legal assistants may work in various areas such as healthcare regulatory compliance, healthcare contract management, healthcare fraud and abuse, medical malpractice, and healthcare transactions and mergers. They may also assist healthcare providers and facilities with compliance with laws such as the Affordable Care Act, HIPAA, and the Stark Law.

To be successful in this role, paralegals and legal assistants must have strong research and analytical skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with clients and other legal professionals. They must also have a good understanding of legal procedures and be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. Many paralegals have a degree or certificate in paralegal studies and must have a good knowledge of the healthcare industry and its legal and regulatory environment.
