Medigy: Mandibular Advancement

Mandibular advancement refers to the process of moving the lower jaw (mandible) forward in order to treat certain conditions such as sleep apnea or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. The most common way of achieving mandibular advancement is through the use of a mandibular advancement device (MAD), which is a type of oral appliance worn during sleep. The MAD works by repositioning the lower jaw and tongue, which helps to keep the airway open and prevent the collapse of the soft tissue in the back of the throat. This can reduce or eliminate the symptoms of sleep apnea, such as loud snoring and interrupted breathing. Mandibular advancement can also be achieved through surgical procedures, such as genioglossus advancement, in which the tongue-attaching muscle is repositioned to move the mandible forward.
